Kevin Burke

Kevin began teaching himself to play guitar when he was about 12. As the years progressed, he accumulated a background in ragtime and country blues style, rock, folk and jazz guitar. He was inspired to begin formal studies of the classical guitar after hearing the great Manuel Barrueco’s recordings which he fell in love with in the 1980s while studying jazz and some classical guitar with Peter Prisco. Kevin began formally studying classical guitar in 1986 with Yasha Kofman at the American Institute of Guitar in NYC. He would later study with Jorge Caballero. After this time, he took time off to write his first book and complete postgraduate studies in psychoanalysis. He would go on to also perform as a cabaret singer and performer. However, in 2020 he soon returned to intensive study of the classical guitar with Franco Platino at the Peabody Preparatory program.

Kevin lives in Staten Island with his husband Miguel and is very happy to join the Brooklyn Classical Guitar Society. He lived in Brooklyn in the Boerum Hill section during the 70s and is very fond of his time there. He is also impressed by the welcoming members he has met and events they have sponsored. He looks forward to attending more and performing there at the Open Mics.
